About Katrina and Winter: Partners in Courage

All Katrina Simpkins longs to be is a normal girl. Because she must wear prosthesis as a leg, she feels anything but. When she meets and befriends Winter, the tailless dolphin, at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, everything changes, including Katrina’s whole life.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK!

Katrina And Winter Partners in Courage
By Nancy Stewart

Katrina has a birth defect that would limit a lot of young ladies lives, but she didn’t let it limit what she did. Katrina learns to walk with a prosthetic leg, no perfect, but she is walking none the less.

Winter has been rescued, missing part of his tail, but Winter also has a prosthetic to help him to swim.

Katrina and Winter’s disabilities draw them both together into a wonderful story of love, courage, help, faith and hope. Though Katrina is not always with Winter, she still draws courage and strength from Winter just thinking about how he never quits, he keeps on swimming.

Nancy Stewart has penned another wonderful story for children of all ages, and well as adults. Anyone with disability situations can use encouragement to keep on going. And that is just what the author does here in her book. I highly recommend that you purchase this book to keep on your bookshelf for you child. And really, children without disabilities will benefit from reading this book, it will help them know how to deal with children they come in contact with that have physical problems like this.

This would be a wonderful addition to any home library, church, school or public library.

Here’s Lily by Nancy Rue

Book Description

Grow with the spirited, sometimes awkward, but always charming Lily as she learns what real beauty is.

In this fun, entertaining story, readers meet awkward sixth grader Lily Robbins who, after receiving a compliment about her looks from a woman in the modeling business, becomes obsessed with her appearance and with becoming a model. As she sets her sights on winning the model search fashion show, she exchanges her rock and feather collection for lip gloss, fashion magazines, and a private “club” with her closest friends. But when the unthinkable happens the night before the fashion show, Lily learns a valuable lesson about real beauty.

This best-selling, Biblically based fiction series for girls—with a fresh new look and updated content—addresses social issues and coming-of-age topics, all with the spunk and humor of Lily Robbins as she fumbles her way through unfamiliar territory. As readers come to love Lily and her stories, they’ll also benefit from the companion nonfiction books that will help them through their own growing pains.

My Thoughts on This Book

Another awesome YA book for young ladies. Nancy Rue has that special nick for writing books for girls this age, which is so much needed today! I love that Nancy deals with issues that these gals face in real life, which is what makes this book so very awesomely special. And she does it was with such grace and humor.

In this book, Lily doesn’t have a lot of confidence in herself, and with the teasing and abuse she puts up from her friend, that doesn’t help matters at all. But it was when Lily was chosen to take modeling classes that changed everything for her. But then again, she was forced to face issues that would make her second guess herself as well as God. Join Lily, her family and friends as she tackles the issues she faces in this book. You will be glad you did!

If you have tween and teen girls, then you need to get this book for them. The colors, the layout, the topics, the author, its all for the young girls. I can’t stress enough my feelings for having books like this for teens and tweens to read. I’ve seen it first hand, they will read books like this, listed to what the author says, before they will sometimes listen to what their own family says. Thats just what this age child does! You won’t be disappointed with this book!

Description of this little Bible:

Specially designed for very young children, the God Helps Me Biblefeatures a spiral binding that allows the book to lay flat on a table, floor, or lap, which leaves little hands free to turn the pages and point out fun details in Clare Caddy’s darling illustrations. The twenty-five favorite Bible stories use words and concepts tailored for the youngest reader, so each story clearly emphasizes how God loves and helps His world and people.

My Thoughts on God Helps Me Bible

God Helps Me Bible

This is a really cute Bible for small children. The stories are short so that some children can even memorize them. I really like the spiral bound, and especially since they have the spirals covered up, and the pages open easily. The illustrations are adorable, with beautiful colors and cute child-like characters so children can relate to the characters. One especially nice feature is the thickness and quality of the pages. My three year old niece plays with and reads this Bible all of the time, and the quality of the Bible keeps it nice and in great shape even though it is a constant book she looks at and reads. And she does read it, she knows most of the stories, so she looks at the pictures and makes up her own little story, so adorable.

I appreciate authors like Juliet David, illustrators such as Clare Caddy and publishers like Candle Books and Kregel Publishers for Bibles for children that they can look at and read in their own little way. It is never too early to teach children about Jesus, and this precious Bible is one of the many ways we have to do just that.

My only disappointment with this Bible is that there is no story on Jesus giving His life so that we could have eternal life through Him. I know why it was left out, but this being the most important thing in the Bible because it is our only way of a home in Heaven, I feel it should be included. This is why the 4 stars instead of 5. Everything else about the Bible I love.

I received this book free from Kregel Publishing. I was not required or expected to write a positive review. The opinions here are my own.

ABOUT CLUTTER CUT

Open Cloot’s door and it’s quite revealing. Clutter, clutter right up to the ceiling. If he hadn’t a roof it would rise to the sky. Will Cloot part with some? He doesn’t see why! One day Cloot’s dad peers into his room to see a mountain of unused toys. Together they form Clutter Cut, Inc. and get a box ready to be filled. Cloot spends hours in a jam though— which toys will go and which ones will stay. There’s nothing great about giving toys away— or is there…?

Clutter Cut, Inc. by Lexter Lex

Illustrated by Guillermo Piloto

“Clutter Cut,” Inc is about Cloot, a little boy who just has too many toys. They were everywhere. It was impossible to get around in his room because it was full of toys. He had toys outside, in the shed, everywhere you looked there was toys. Cloot’s dad gave him an idea to give some of his toys away to other’s, maybe children who need something to cheer them, but Cloot wanted to keep them for himself. But as his dad encouraged him, Cloot listened, and thus thought of the name Clutter Cut, Inc. Read this book to find out what Clutter Cut, Inc. is and what they did to help other children in their community.

I love this adorable book, teaching children to share what they have with others. This would be a great idea for children everywhere to take on. I love the graphics inside the book, making the piles of toys obvious, and needing some help getting cleaned up.

The only disappointment with this book is the front cover. Where the illustrations on the cover are adorable and fit the name of the book perfectly, it is impossible to make out the name of the book. The only way I did was when I saw the name on the back of the book, I turned it over and figured it out. The name of the book should be readable at first glance. I even like how they displayed the name, it just needs something to make it stand out more.

That said, all in all, this is a wonderful book, and I really like the lesson it teaches children about giving their own things to help others. I encourage you to grab a copy of this cute book and read it to your child.

PUYB Tour Super Luke Faces His Bully…by Dr. Jackie C. Cogswell

PUYB Tour Super Luke Faces His Bully…by Dr. Jackie C. Cogswell

Super Luke Banner

About Super Luke Faces His Bully

Super Luke Faces His Bully is a fun loving adventure spoken straight from the heart of a super-sweet eight-year-old bully victim, Luke Giggleheart.  The Word of God is used as a lens to examine some of the issues that can make a person act like either a bully or a victim. During this adventure, Luke, our tender-hearted bully victim, learns about fear, being courageous and getting adults to help, while praying for his enemies.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Bullies are everywhere. At school, in your neighbor, and even at church. What should we do about someone that bullies us? Or what should be done to you if you are the one who bullies other people? In her book “Super Luke Faces His Bully,” Dr. Jakie C. Cogswell addresses the issues that come with someone being bullied.

Harry Jones was not someone Luke wanted in his life. Why? Because he had to face the abuse of being bullied by Harry whenever they were around each other. And the things that Harry did to Luke were not nice at all, they were embarrassing and they caused a lot of different emotions and attitudes with Luke.

Luke had a lot of channels in his head, and if we think about it, we all really do. He had a scary channel, attitude channel, yummy channel, God channel and more. Luke’s mom was always replenishing the God channel with good things when she meets with Luke and his buddies at their Bible Buddies Club. When Luke had the God channel on, this put good things into his brain to think about.  I love the idea of the channels. How true this is of every person really, and this is an awesome way to describe what goes on in our minds. And to put it on a child’s level as the author did, well this is just good professional and unique writing by Dr. Cogswell.

There is so much packed in this book I could go on and on talking about the different things, but you really need to grab a copy of this book for yourself to read and to have for your young readers.

This book is just plain good! The author uses God’s word to teach principles to your children of all ages how do deal with others doing things to them.

The book as a wonderful layout, and the illustrations are adorable. The entire inside and outside of the book is eyecatching and captures your attention, I highly recommend this book to everyone! Even adults will benefit from the lessons learned in this book,

The UnHappy Little Dragon…..Lessons Learned

By Carolyn Wolfe   Illustrated by Leslie Mathis

Little Dragon Synopsis

This is the tale of a little Dragon who has a big problem, he cannot control his fire!

After a major mishap, he runs away into the forest and has a wonderful adventure where he meets new friends, learns that every creature has a unique gift, and also finds out the special way in which he can use his own remarkable gift of fire.

Little Dragon Excerpt

Shelley asked, looking at Happy expectantly.

Shelley The Turtle  said,”Let me ask you something son, when you practice your fire burning skills-what do you tell yourself?”

“Tell myself? What do you mean?” asked Happy not understanding what his new friend was getting at.

Shelley answered, “Well, maybe I should ask instead, how do you feel when you practice holding in your flame?

“Oh that! I feel scared, so scared that I will fail and burn everything up!” Happy answered sadly.

“Well now, I have a suggestion for you. Try feeling like you will not burn everything up. Instead tell yourself you will succeed in keeping your fire to yourself!” Shelley told him.

“But I am so scared. I really don’t think I can tell myself that I won’t burn everything up when I know I will!”

Happy argued in a worried little voice.

Shelley looked at Happy’s very unhappy face and said,”I have news for you Happy, and I want you to listen to me now!”

Then Shelley continued to explain.

“Dragons aren’t the only ones who have special gifts, Happy, no, no! All of the animals were given a special gift of one kind or another. All of us had to learn how to use it wisely, just like you. You sort of have to grow into your gift, like growing up! That’s why the animals need a teacher.

Can you guess what my special gift is?” Shelley asked, expectantly.

Happy didn’t know the answer so he shook his head and just kept quiet.

“Why Happy, I am a teacher!” Shelley said proudly.

My Thoughts on this book!

What would happen if you couldn’t control your fire? Well that is if you were a dragon. This is a serious problem Little Dragon had to deal with. Once after being so frustrated, Little Dragon ran into the woods, just to get away. He ran and ran. And ran. While in the forest, he started meeting friends. First it was Shelley the turtle, then Betty the bird, then Barney the beaver, and on it goes. Each of Little Dragon’s new friends loved his fire, and encouraging him, telling his it was his gift. As with Little Dragon’s gift, the other forest friend each had their own special gift that they shared. Read this wonderful book and take a trip to this forest of gifted friends.

In “The Happy Little Dragon,” Carolyn Wolfe writes a wonderful story to teach young readers that they are special, no matter how different they are. Using the animals in the forest helps teach children to feel differently about their fears and disappointments. Carolyn Wolfe has a special gift herself in writing stories like this to teach valuable lessons to her young readers. And the illustrations are adorable. The Little Dragon and the forest animals have a sweet childish personality, with colors that invite you in the pages. I highly recommend that you grab a copy of this beautifully written and illustrated book to read to your child.

Then she moved to Florida where she was an active volunteer in the local historical society and remained active in the arts. In 2005 Jaimie wrote her first children’s book, The Adventures of Baby Jaimie, published in 2006 and Who Says You Can”t Go Home? in 2008. The Adventures of Baby Jaimie: Baby Jaimie Goes to School in 2010. AN INTERVIEW WITH JAIMIE HOPE

Thank you for this interview, Jaimie.  Do you remember writing stories as a child or did the writing bug come later?  Do you remember your first published piece?

A: I was born disabled. Like my character, Baby Jaimie, I am in a wheelchair. While my home life was what I consider to be average, my school life wasn’t. I wasn’t allowed to do anything. When other children ran around the playground I was forced to sit on the edge of the playground just watching. Watching wasn’t much fun, so I’d make up stories to entertain myself while the other kids were running around.

My first publish piece was my first book, The Adventures of Baby Jaimie. Prior to that I did have article published in the school paper in high school where I was on staff.

What do you consider as the most frustrating side of becoming a published author and what has been the most rewarding?

A: The most frustrating side of becoming a published author has been marketing. he most rewarding part has been meeting different kids at events.

Are you married or single and how do you combine the writing life with home life?  Do you have support?

A: I’m single.  I right from home, so my home life and my writing life really is combined. When something in my home life needs my attention the writing life gets put on the backburner and vice versa.

What do you like to do for fun when you’re not writing?  Where do you like to vacation?  Can you tell us briefly about this?

A: When I’m not writing (and sometimes when I am) I  blast music. I also enjoy watching sports, especially Nascar on television, playing basketball, and watching old movies.

With the exception of this year I have spent the last few winters in Florida with my grandparents. While there I often take a break from writing and catch up on my reading.

If you could be anywhere in the world for one hour right now, where would that place be and why?

A:  There’s no other place I’d rather be.

Who is your biggest fan?

A: As far as I know I don’t have one.

Where’s your favorite place to write at home?

A: In my room.

Do you have any pets?

A: No

Tell us a secret no one else knows.

A: Sorry, I don’t have any

What’s on your to do list today?

A: I have to finish another interview and do some research for my next Paranormal Romance.

Now I’ve got a couple of fun questions for you.  If Tom Hanks, in the movie Cast Away, unearthed a copy of your book, how would that help him find a way off the island?

A: It wouldn’t, but hopefully it would be a source of entertainment until he died on the island.

You have a chance to appear on the hit talent show for authors, American Book Idol, with judges Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, Kara Dioguardi and the newest addition, Ellen DeGeneres, to determine whether your book will make it to Hollywood and become a big screenplay where you’d make millions of dollars.  What would impress them more – your book cover, an excerpt or your author photo – and why?

A: I’d have to say the book cover would impress them the most simply because it seems to be the one thing that impresses everyone else.

You just got word that your book has received the 2010 NY Times Bestselling Book Award and you have to attend the ceremony to give an acceptance speech.  Anyone who’s anyone will be there and it’s your shot for stardom.  What would you say and who would you thank?

A: I have a fear of public speaking, so I might spend most of my time trying to get out of going to the ceremony. If that failed I would probably make my acceptance speech as short as possible by saying “Thank you to everyone who purchased my book.”

I understand that you are touring with Pump Up Your Book Promotion in (April) via a virtual book tour.  Can you tell us all why you chose a virtual book tour to promote your book online?

A: I was looking for a new way to promote my latest release. The idea of a blog tour came up in my research and it seemed like a fun way to promote my writing, so I decided to give it a try.

Thank you for this interview, (Jaimie). Good luck on your virtual book tour!

A: Thank you

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

The Adventures of Baby Jaimie: Baby Jaimie gets Stage Fright

Jaimie is excited that her class at school will be doing a play of The Three Little Pigs. She was surprised however to find out that the parents would be there to watch the play. Jaimie thought she should get the most important speaking part in the play, but when the teacher gave out the parts, Jaimie was not only disappointed, she was mad. Why do you think Jaimie was mad? Can you guess what part Mrs. Johnson gave Jaimie?

“Baby Jaimie gets Stage Fright” is an adorable story that teaches children several valuable lessons. One lesson is that we don’t always get what we want, we need to accept what we’re given in situations such as Jaimie was in. Also, we can succeed in whatever we do; even if is something different that what we wanted to do. And, to learn to get along with others, and to be content in what we have or what we were chosen to do.

This is a well-written book with adorable illustrations that help tell the story. I highly recommend this book for any household with small children, and school libraries as well. Books that teach children valuable lessons like this one are worth your investment.

ABOUT THIS BOOK

The gospels tell of Simon of Cyrene–”a man coming in from the country”–who was ordered to carry Jesus’ cross. Over the centuries, his story has been woven into a Polish folktale. In the tradition of The Three Treesthis folk tale gives a fresh perspective on the Easter story.

When Simon the farmer brings his wares to market, little does he expect how he will be involved in the events of that very special day, nor how his items–bread, eggs, and wine–will become important symbols of Jesus’ passion and resurrection, remembered throughout the ages.

This picture book retelling of a traditional tale is both thought-provoking and engaging.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

I have to say I was very disappointed in the text of this book. While it talks about a cross, Simon caring the cross, a man is to die because of “Preaching a message of peace”, it failed in telling the Easter Story as it really is. And it never mentions Jesus, and isn’t He the One we want to teach our children about? It talks about Simon returning home and hearing wings of dove, and it pretty much says that everything turns out perfect.

I just feel that children need to know the details of the Easter Story. Why Jesus came and why the crowds were angry at Him, and why He really died on that cross. I’m sorry I just can’t give this story more than a 2 rating.

However, the one really nice thing about the book is the illustrations. Anna Luraschi’s illustrations are pretty and colorful. The pictures go well with the story. The cover and the inside is very eye-catching.

I wish I could recommend this book to you for your child, but I really can’t. I feel there are many other books about Easter that gives the story in a more detailed and correct way.

The Priest and the Peaches Book Summary

Historical fiction novel set in the Bronx in the mid-1960s
Take a seven day journey with the five, newly orphaned Peach kids, as they begin their struggle to remain a family while planning their dad’s funeral. They find an ally in the local parish priest, Father Tim Sullivan, who tries his best to guide them through the strange, unchartered and turbulent waters of “grown-up world.” A story that is sad, funny, and inspiring as it shows how the power of family love and faith can overcome seemingly insurmountable
My Thoughts on this Book!
I had the honor to read and review Larry Peterson’s book Slippery Willie and it was such an awesome book I was excited to read this one as well. This is another wonderful book from Larry, a historical written to young adults, but I feel children and adults will relate to this as well.
The sudden death of a father tears this family apart, leaving 5 Peach kids to take care of themselves. The two older children were old enough to take care of their three siblings. As we follow this heartwarming story we learn to love the unique characters that are so believable, taking them into our hearts. As they continue their lives without their father, they show love and happiness as a family and faith in God and each other. There are a lot of lessons we all can learn from this wonderful story, and especially the lesson of forgiveness such as was displayed in this story so warm.
